The case against Linktree
Linktree used to be our go-to tool for storing all of the links that we were trying to drive traffic to. Fortunately, as with all great marketing– we experimented, found a better alternative, and adapted.
First things first, what is Linktree?
A free and paid tool, Linktree helps to leverage traffic from platforms in which you are limited to a single URL link but have multiple websites, landing pages, or content and is most commonly used on Instagram.
Top three reasons you should stop using Linktree
1. Lack of branding
One of the biggest limitations, if you’re using the free version of Linktree, is in branding exposure.
In place of your logo, Linktree’s logo appears whenever someone clicks on the Linktree link. The Linktree profile is another missed branding opportunity; with only five color settings to choose from, you are unlikely to utilize your brand’s or business colors.
Lastly, the link tied to your account (https://linktr.ee/username) is also mostly branded to Linktree rather than to your brand or business.
Our chosen alternative allows you to capitalize on all of these missed branding opportunities.
2. Minimal analytics
Without paying $6 for the “Pro” version, Linktree only allows you to see the number of times that someone has clicked on your links. This means that you really have no way of knowing which of your links is performing best.
How can you make smarter marketing decisions without knowing what links are driving traffic for you?!
Utilizing our alternative, you get all of the data you need to make better marketing decisions and all for free!
3. Link building
The ultimate paradox of Linktree lies in the fact that although you’re housing all of your links on their platform, you’re actually driving traffic to them!
You read that right. Yes, your links are connected but anyone who clicks on your Linktree link has to visit their website before ever reaching one of yours.
This is particularly hurtful to your digital marketing strategy if you are attempting any sort of search engine optimization or link building strategy as you are creating outbound links for Linktree rather than for your website assets.
What to use instead of Linktree
Now that you’ve read our case as to why you shouldn’t use Linktree, here’s what we recommend instead.
The better option to Linktree
Here is an example of the better option:
The best alternative to having a Linktree would be to create a page on your website that holds all of the links that you want to drive traffic to.
Clicking your link will take people to YOUR website, not Linktree’s. You’ll increase traffic to your website, drive brand awareness, and – best of all – allow visitors to click through to other pages on your site, giving it some search engine love. In addition, you will have better data about what content is winning and what types of users are visiting your website.
